The rare total eclipse will take place in the early hours of January 31 over Australia, eastern Asia and parts of Canada.Viewers can expect to see a blue moon – the second full moon in a calendar month – orbiting closer to the Earth than usual, making it seem up to 14 percent larger in the sky.If that wasn’t enough there will also be a total lunar eclipse, which is often described a blood moon because of the way the moon turns a gorgeous coppery red.A live stream from the International Space Station will allow viewers from all over the world to witness the spectacular phenomenon.Tom Kerss, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory, said: “There’s a huge amount of interest in super moons at the moment – a lot of interest in a full moon, but it could be a phase.“There is just a renewed interest in moon watching and we did have some really unusually large super moons at the end of last year and the beginning of this year.“Because we’ve got a second full moon this month, we actually have what we call a blue moon – more of a modern colloquialism, the definition sort of got changed in the 20th Century.“A blue moon now is generally accepted as being the second full moon in a month, and because both of January’s moons are supermoons, technically speaking, it’s quite an exciting month for moon watchers.”Those in the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand will have a chance to see the super blue blood moon eclipse during moonrise and the evening hours of Wednesday.

Dr Daniel Brown, an astronomy expert at Nottingham Trent University, said that the UK is on the side of the world that cannot see the moon at the time of the eclipse. But for the rest of the world, he said: “Everywhere where you will be able to see the full moon, you will be able to see the lunar eclipse.” NASA has confirmed that the moon will whizz 223,068 miles from Earth, rather than the usual 238,855 miles, causing it to appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter in the night sky.Unfortunately, the moon won’t move into the Earth’s umbra until near sunrise along the US’s east coast, making it more difficult to get a good view of the eclipse. As the moon ducks behind the Earth, it will glow in a beautiful reddish hue due to a quirk of our planet’s atmosphere.

The last time there was a super blue blood moon eclipse was 150 years ago in 1866, when Andrew Johnson was serving as the President of the United States following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

Skywatchers on the US’s west coast will have the best views of the eclipse, with NASA confirming that residents of Hawaii, Alaska and California all the way up to western Canada should be able to see the entire display, weather permitting.
